“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
How many of us have read this verse and thought it means to find a corner, sit quietly, think about God, and, well, know that He is God? And it does. But the original Hebrew root of be still doesn’t mean “be quiet”, it means “let go”.
I don’t know about you, but when transitioning into a new year, I always think about the past year: what was good, what was not so good, but especially, what I can let go of and not bring forward with me into a fresh new year.
We all go through seasons that aren’t so good, and often they follow us long past their expiry date. Yet, we struggle to let go of the tough things even if we’ve entered into a new season and those things are long past. Our minds wander back to the not-so-good. All of us have situations like this I’m sure.
“But that was hard. I’m not ready to let go yet.” Be still (let go!) and know that I am God.
Often when situations have no closure, we hang onto it and cannot let go to control the outcome, when really, only God controls the outcomes in our lives.
Maybe it’s a bad job or harsh boss who wronged you. LET GO! Family situations that have you bending your brain to solve. LET GO! Physical challenges that are frustrating you. LET GO! Financial troubles. LET GO! Let go and know that I am God!
We know He’s God. We have surrendered our lives fully to Him. (Or have we? Maybe all but that one hard part that we’re trying to solve by ourselves?) Sometimes we can’t (or won’t) let go. Yet, letting go, free falling into God’s capable hands, is the safest place to be! My spiritual mom once told me, “God’s hands are too big to ever fall out of.” What a place of safety we have!
I sense Him saying: I am your God. I know when you sit, and when you rise. I know every hair on your head. I know everything about you, and my plans for you are good. Will you “let go” today and let me take charge of that situation?
Be still and know that I am God.
LET GO and KNOW that I am God.
Thank you, Lord, that I can let go of every weight into your Almighty hands and know that you have the very best for me.
